What are Dry Type Transformers and What are their Types?

A dry type transformer has all stationary parts, they don’t move. It is a static equipment that utilizes ecofriendly temperature insulation systems. Conventional liquid type transformers are dependent on ecofriendly taxing materials such as oil or fireproof liquid dielectric. Dry means that the system is cooled via the natural ventilation rather than using oil, liquid or silicon to cool the coils and the electrical core. This kind of transformer is known as voltage changing. In other words, the air is cooled rather than the cooling liquid. The case where the transformer is equipped inside is ventilated so that the air can cool the coils. Unlike the liquid transformers, dry type transformers are not needed to be installed inside of fire resistant vaults or catch basins, and venting the toxic gases out needs the least of your concerns. Types of dry transformers

  1. Open wound transformer

This kind of transformer gained its name via the manufacturing process that entails the dip and bake method. The coils are warmed, dipped in high temperature varnish and then baked. This process is called the open wound method.

  1. Vacuum pressure impregnated or VPI

The VPI transformers are usually used for industrial and commercial purposes. They bear a high temperature insulation that is ranked over O and K fluid classifications. VPI transformers are composed of materials that can tolerate high temperatures and moisture resistant polyester sealant that is normally applied with a vacuum pressure impregnation technique. Mostly they are rated up to 30 MVA.

  1. Vacuum Pressure Encapsulated or VPE

The VPE transformers are comparable to its counterpart above. Yet, rather than made from polyester, they are made from a silicon based resin which in turn, creates a thicker coating that is highly moisture-, salt-, and high humidity-resistant. This consequently makes it an excellent choice for extreme environments. They are used in such environments which are susceptible to acids, alkalis, and chlorides.

  1. Cast Coil

Cast coil transformers can be relied on even in extreme weather conditions and need very little upkeep. They are usually found inside of buildings and tunnels, offshore platforms, onboard ships, nuclear plants, production plants, and mining facilities.
