Jeff Bezos, founder and chief executive of Amazon, summarily dismissed The New York Times’ mid-August portrait of his ecommerce powerhouse as “a soulless, dystopian workplace where no fun is had and no laughter is heard.” He passionately contends, “I don’t think any company adopting the approach portrayed could survive, much less thrive, in today’s highly competitive tech hiring market.” He prefers to think of his hard-charging firm and the associated company culture as “friendly and intense.”  I think the conflict comes from the definition of “intense.” But the tales unfurled…
